The Spicewood Arts Society (SAS) is continuing to promote music and literacy in the Hill Country with presentations by storyteller, author, musician, and comedian, Tom McDermott. McDermott entertained students with folk tales and lively music at Highland Lakes Elementary Friday afternoon. Two student groups filled the HLE gym for the presentations. The students were happily engaged in the music and storytelling, clapping, singing, and shouting along when prompted.
“Our students loved how Mr. McDermott combined music with his storytelling,” said HLE Principal, Bethany Birdwell. “He used personal stories and historical tales to entertain and involve our students in the show!”
Birdwell commented that the Spicewood Arts Society is driven by local volunteers who help meet the needs of students in area schools.
The Spicewood Arts Society raises funds to support arts programs and scholarships in the Lake Travis and Marble Falls school districts. If you would like to help them meet their mission, and have some musical fun too, the SAS is holding its annual scholarship fundraiser, Friday, February 19th at the Spicewood Events Center. The evening will begin with a silent auction from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner catered by Verdes Café, and music from Austin’s premier 10 piece show band, “The Matchmaker Band”.
