The Smart Smiles dental team offered Marble Falls ISD Elementary students free dental education and preventative services to students with parent permission Friday. Students participated in 20-minute dental education programs designed to be fun and informative for elementary-age students.
“Today was a free screening and dental education day,” said Leslie Baty, MFISD’s Director of Elementary Education. “Smart Smiles will follow-up by offering our students free preventative treatments after the Holidays. The kids are so excited to meet the volunteer dentists and learn about dental health!”
Registered Dental Hygienist, Jen Banton, helped coordinate the Smart Smiles’ dentists and hygienists. The screenings, education, and preventative treatments were all provided by community without charges to private insurance, Medicaid, or MFISD families. Dr. Teri Reed-Cook, Dr. Susan Henson, Dr. Ben Taylor, and Dr. Andy Doerfler offered Marble Falls Elementary, Spicewood Elementary, Colt Elementary, and Highland Lakes Elementary students the free dental exams with the help of hygienists from around the Highland Lakes area. The service and education topics were presented in both English and Spanish to meet the preventative treatment needs of all of our students and their families.
“Marble Falls’ community member, Rich Robertson, volunteered with the Smart Smiles program in Burnet last year,” said MFISD Superintendent, Dr. Chris Allen. “He asked us to help bring the program to Marble Falls to serve our students here. After hearing how Smart Smiles would benefit our students, we were eager to offer the services to our families. The program is a perfect example of how the community comes along side and partners with the District in a way that helps our students in school and in life.”
